Here at Gateway, the most important thing for us is to become disciples of Jesus. When Jesus sent out his disciples to make other disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20) he first modelled what this looked like to his very own disciples. When we look at Jesus life he had 3 levels of discipleship. He had the Crowd, which he taught and ministered to as he travelled. He had his 12 disciples who spent a lot of time with him and then he had a core group of 3 (Peter, James and John). Each grouping of people had a different purpose and they also had different levels of intimacy.
Here at Gateway, we also have “the crowd” that meets every Sunday morning, and we have “Home Groups” that meet in people's homes throughout the week that can be around 12 people. We also want to create “Core Groups”. Core groups are small clusters of 3-4 people that meet together to learn and study scripture, pray together and generally support one another in their spiritual journey.
Core groups are great for people who are curious to faith, very new to faith or just desire a closer more intimate group to meet with.
A Core Group is the optimum setting for the convergence of four environmental conditions that create intentional growth:
1. Transparent trust
2. The truth of God’s Word in intimate community
3. Life-changing accountability
4. Supporting one another in our God-given mission
